THE TEXT OF THE LETTER
The Wonderland Project,
October 2021
To the leaders meeting at COP26,
If you’re reading this, you’ve found our message in a bottle.
This sketchbook of original watercolor paintings by Geraldine van Heemstra was inspired by Kate Ellis’s original song “Wonderland”. The artwork was created in a single day walking in nature.
These works are an expression of how connected we feel to the beauty around us every day, and how heartbreaking it is to face its destruction.
Together, we hope that the song and sketchbook bring emotion and voice to the global rallying cry for urgent action to protect our planet at COP26.
Like many people around the world, we are scared and sad about what is happening to our environment. This project is a way to process and reflect these feelings. And an opportunity to connect with others who share our fears, as well as our hope.
Like many people around the world, we are scared and sad about what is happening to our environment. This project is a way to process and reflect these feelings. And an opportunity to connect with others who share our fears, as well as our hope.
This is our contribution to the growing chorus urging you to be brave, and to take the necessary action in Glasgow to respect and protect our environment.
Brought to COP26 by our friends at Letters To The Earth, we hope this small gift can inspire you to reconnect with the wonder of our natural world and do what needs to be done to safeguard its future.
With hope and love,

About the artists
Geraldine van Heemstraam is a visual artist most inspired by the intangibility and emotion in the shape, sound and movement of the natural world.
Singer-songwriter Kate Ellis wrote the song ‘Wonderland’ after a walk in a city park, where she was struck by flashes of how alive, powerful, and beautiful nature is and how connected to it we are.
